About this initiative
Through my studies I have come to learn that it is possible to alleviate the problems of maternal mortality with well-designed and meaningfully focused educational programs.
The challenge to the creation and operation of these programs, however, is twofold. First, the absence of teaching materials to assist mothers in understanding how to improve nutritional intake and their effects, and a group of trained personnel to assist in delivering this information in a timely and meaningful manner.
Research suggests that the most powerful way to affect the health and welfare of a child is through improved understanding of the child’s mother. This project will focus on the development of teaching materials and a system for helping mothers of young children learn appropriate food and nutritional information to help in the development of their children. And it will occur in a local community location close to where these mothers are living.
Further, the project will build upon the very successful SMF program to involve student volunteers in the offering of services to mothers. In addition to using these as a viable form of manpower for the offering of service, the project will work to help these volunteers gain meaningful information and techniques to effectively teach this information to others.

MISSION
Recognizing that maternal health is a basic human right, SMF works with partners worldwide to stimulate new thinking and generate evidence- based solutions to improve maternal and infant survival. SMF supports actions and interventions to strengthen overall health systems so that whenever and wherever emergencies happen – from home to hospital – lives will be saved by effective and timely response.

VISION
We believe in a world that respects and upholds the dignity of all women and their basic human right to survive pregnancy and childbirth.
