About this initiative
SAFE MOTHERHOOD FOUNDATION is a community-based mother and infant center
located in Accra and operating all around the country. S. M. F focuses on the provision of education and counseling for mothers on maternal issues, especially for those from extremely low-income areas. We are hopeful that through the provision of information to the mothers, it will be possible to have a direct and positive effect on the well-being of all mothers in the targeted communities.
A mother’s survival
Some major obstacles to a mother’s survival during pregnancy and childbirth in the developing countries are that they are not educated about the importance of antenatal care during pregnancy and its importance to safe delivery. Pregnant women, especially in most of our communities and villages resort to all forms of unorthodox methods during pregnancy which result in complications during child delivery and sometimes maternal and infant mortality.
Statistics also show that there is an increase in maternal mortality rates in Ghana. There is also a zero mortality target that Ghana must achieve in its Millennium Development Goals. In this light, Safe Motherhood Foundation (SMF) is being established to partner the work of the Ministry of Health in Ghana to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates to the barest minimum.
